HOMOZYGOUS PINTOS & CREMELLO / DILUTES INFORMATION

Were would we be without COLOR?  It is exciting, challenging and valuable in the horse world.  It is HOT!!!  Even though "Color Is Not Everything", spotted horses across America and world wide sell for two and three times higher then most solids (even given similar quality and sometimes less).   COLOR SELLS!!!  These flashy marked spotted and dilute color coats catch the eyes and hearts of the on lookers.  Cascade Colors is proud to offer this page to the EXCITING WORLD OF EQUINE COLOR as an effort to make addition information available to the public.  Here at CASCADE COLORS we not only offer COLOR but we are very proud to offer QUALITY, ABILITY, AND BREEDING! Please enjoy and we hope that this page is useful information for you in your horse breeding or reserch needs.  Thank you, Beverly

THE HOMOZYGOUS TOBIANO

Striking Supreme Vision

One pinto producing gene (Hetrozygous)

Homozygous, in equine genetics, means that the animal contains an identical pair of genes and which, therefore, always breeds true to type.  The word homozygous is becoming more and more common with color breeeders, but is often misunderstood, misused, mispronounced and misadvertised.

A double - gened homozygous tobiano is genetically able to produce spotted foals every time, no matter what color the other parent is.  Every horse, mare or stallion, inharits one color gene from each of its parents, but will only pass on one of those to its offspring.  The double-gened tobiano will then pass on only a spotted color gene every time -which dominates any other solid color gene passed on by the other parent, resulting in a genetically spotted foal.

HOMOZYGOUS TOBIANO STALLION - Two pinto producing genes

If we understand that genetically, the foal will always receive the gene from the Tobiano homozygous parent, can we be 100% sure that the foal, every single time, will have the physical appearance of a spotted foal, or a Pinto?  The answer to that is NO.  While genetically the foal will be a Tobiano, sometimes, tn very rare and unusual circumstances, the foal can appear (Phenotype) to be what is homozygous Tobianos to solid horses. The "Solid" looking foal will have the genetic makeup of a tobiano, but the phenotype (appearance) of a solic.  These horses are usually known as "Crypto-Tobianos".  Crypto-Tobianos usually have unusualy have white feet and extensively white legs, but a minimally marked head.  This is an unusual combination and is a subtle, but important, indication of the horse's true genetic makeup.  Though these minimally marked horses are genetically Tobiano, they are usually missed as being such because they lack body spots.

CASCADE COLORS stands both the 2001 & 2002 OPtHA High Pinto SA/PL In-Hand Stallions "STRIKING SUPREME VISION & SPOTZ SENSATION (photod above as youngsters).  Both stallions achieved outstanding success in the show ring as yearlings, a true test of their outstanding conformation, breeding and ability to preform.
Strike carries one pinto gene and one solid.  Sensation carries two (homozygous) pinto genes and therefore is genetically able to produce a spotted foal everytime.  Cascade Colors does guarantee in writing that your foal will be tobiano.
